Trio VD at Jazz Club February 2010

trio-vd-by-russ-escritt

The latest in our series of podcasts of Jazz Club gigs is from Trio VD. As ever one track is here and the entire gig is on our Downloads page.

Continuing with our loosely themed bands with a rock influence series at Jazz Club, we had the mighty Trio VD in February 2010. The force of the band was something to behold; the sheer volume of air moved by the P.A. a statement of intent. Superb musicianship and excellent writing made this one of the most memorable Jazz Club gigs for some time.

Led Bib @ Jazz Club 2010

Led Bib Mark Holub

A great band who first played at Jazz Club some time ago. Since then Led Bib have gone on to great success including being nominated for a Mercury Music Prize and playing on the Channel 4 news! They were certainly rocking when they visited us in January this year, and there was a strong turn out for the gig which began something of a rock influenced mini-season for Jazz Club.

Please visit: www.birminghamjazz.co.uk/jazzclub to hear the whole set

Zed U at Jazz Club November 2009

Zed-U are Shabaka Hutchings, Neil Charles and Tom Skinner. Their debut album, Night time on the middle passage was launched last year to critical acclaim and was played to death in the Birmingham Jazz office. For their gig at Jazz Club in November, Tom had a more than able replacement in Polar Bear’s Seb Rochford. Zed-U describe themselves as playing music they’d like to hear and luckily, it’s music we like to hear too.

As usual, one track is included in the podcast the whole gig can be heard at: http://www.birminghamjazz.co.uk/jazzclub.htm

Sam Wooster Quartet @ Jazz Club October 2009

Sam Wooster

After an extended break from our podcast series, we’re back! This time it’s young trumpet player Sam Wooster’s Quartet. We’ll be bringing you more gigs soon including Zed-U, Lizzy Parks and The Sub Ensemble. As ever one track from the gig is included on this podcast. To hear the rest of the gig visit: http://www.birminghamjazz.co.uk/jazzclub.htm

Sam is a graduate of the conservatoire jazz course, and leads this band of fellow graduates. Very much influenced by Cuong Vu’s approach to soundscaping and texture (we were lucky enough to have Cuong Vu at Jazz Club earlier in the year – see below), Sam presented an electrifying set of original material back in October.

Twelves Trio @ Jazz Club 27th May 2009

We’re back with another Podcast. This time it’s the turn of Twelves Trio (who aren’t really a Trio at all) who were our guests at Jazz Club in May. We bring you “Candle” written by Tenor player Mark Hanslip from the band’s set. If you enjoy this taster podcast, you can listen to the whole gig at http://www.birminghamjazz.co.uk/jazzclub.htm#tt

Remember that The Rainbow, the home of Jazz Club, is still being threatened by closure due to a EPA Abatement order. Please do all you can to keep this cultural hub alive and well. :-)

Zappajazz @ Jazz Club 25th March 2009

Our guests to Jazz Club in March were the weird and wonderful Zappajazz. As the name suggests, they play Frank Zappa tunes with a jazz twist. This set consists of excellent arrangements of classic Zappa tunes by trumpeter Aaron Diaz.

As always, there’s a taster track in this podcast, but visit our website (http://www.birminghamjazz.co.uk/jazzclub.htm#z) to hear the full gig.
