Once again Birmingham Jazz has teamed up with the fabulous Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath.  After the great success of Nils Petter Molvaer in February we present another boundary stretching trumpeter in Erik Truffaz whose music shares an affinity with NPM. Truffaz is adored for his audacious collaborations, his generous personality, as well as brilliant music. For this gig, Erik will be joined by, on the drums, the great Philippe Garcia and on the mic, Sly Johnson of the Saïan Supa Crew.

Neil is at the forefront of new British jazz. His style is fresh, unpredictable, confident, unconventional, as well as extremely accomplished. A professional since his teenage years, Neil’s musical experience in the more popular areas of the music, such as with the Brand New Heavies and backing pop diva Gabrielle, mean that many coming to jazz from contemporary soul and R’n’B have found his style particularly accessible. With Richard Sadler on bass and Evan Jenkins on drums, the trio will be supporting the launch of their third highly-acclaimed album, Radio Silence.

The Jim Wynn Nonet was formed with the intention of exploring the songbook of Tadd Dameron, the pianist and arranger coined by Dexter Gordon as the “Romanticist” of bebop.  Many of Dameron’s compositions have become well known standards in the jazz repertoire such as ‘Good Bait’, ‘Tadd’s Delight’, ‘Ladybird’ and ‘If You Could See Me Now’.  The Nonet is largely comprised of graduates of the Birmingham Conservatoire’s jazz course including Jim Wynn on piano, Huw Morgan, Chris Morgan and Lluis Mather on saxes, Rob Anstey on trombone, Kieron Mcintosh on trumpet and Tim Thornton on bass.

Wednesday 30th June
Jazz Club @ The Rainbow, Digbeth
9pm
£4

Our jazz club series continues with one of the hardest working musicians in Birmingham.  Barely a week passes without drummer Jim Bashford making an appearance somewhere, but rarely with his own band.  Here he leads a quartet featuring Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jennson who toured with Outhouse last year.  Jim is also joined by Outhouse’s Robin Fincker on sax.  The band will be playing original music by Jim and Hilmar.
