Percy Pursglove Quartet
Following the very successful session in the main hall at Symphony Hall for last year’s Artsfest, we return this year with a special double bill. Ben Markland will be well known to most Rush Hour Blues regulars as he plays with a whole host of local artists. Here he leads his quintet playing a mixture of originals and standards. Next up is Percy Pursglove with a new quartet with Andrew Bain on drums Ross Stanley on Organ and Chris Montague on guitar. Percy’s had a great year so far with an appearance at the Harmonic festival with New York based Claudia Quintet in March. The quartet will be playing original music written by Percy as well as standards.

Ken Vandermark has been a regular visitor to Birmingham over the last few years playing in a fantastic trio with Barry Guy and Mark Sanders as well as with his quintet, Vandermark 5. The band was formed by Ken in 1996 and has been a major outlet for compositional and improvisational ideas for Ken. The band played on a weekly basis for many years at The Empty Bottle in Chicago forming an innate understanding. They are joined on this tour by pan-Scandinavian band Atomic, who have a long history with the KV5 having recorded together in 2004. The band have a modern European sound but are strongly influenced by American free jazz.

American born Tom Hill has been living and working in Birmingham for some time now. The Straitjackets play Tom’s original music as well as versions of tunes by fusion band The Yellow Jackets. The band recorded an album in 2004 (Music of Mass Destruction) which featured a satirical composition lambasting George W Bush, although this time his focus may be on his adopted home rather than the US.
