    Charlotte Glasson Band

    23 May 2014 19:45

Charlotte Glasson with Chris Spedding. We welcome back one of the most popular bands to appear at the Red Lion last year. The line-up is a little different, but not much: Charlotte Glasson, violin, sax, flute, etc; Paul Taylor, trombone; Chris Spedding, guitar; Mick Hutton, bass and steel pans;  Sam Glasson, percussion. They are touring in May 2014 promoting their new studio CD "Festivus."

Those of you who were here last time will remember the leader's many and various instruments, the humour,  the verve and sense of fun of this band. Chris Spedding will produce his legendary licks, Paul his poetry, Charlotte her saw, but Dave Holdsworth of the tuba and pocket trumpet has retired – at least from gigs outside the West Country.

This tour is supported by Jazz Services

This what Peter Bacon had to say about the last time the band were at the Red Lion.

    Phil Robson Organ Trio

    16 May 2014 19:45
This all-star band, came into being after the great success of two recent try out gigs. Phil Robson, versatile and creative guitarist and composer, joined forces with the Hammond virtuoso Ross Stanley and his Partisans colleague, the powerful drummer Gene Calderazzo to form this brand new trio. So much fun was had, by the musicians and audiences alike, that it simply had to become a touring and recording band.

The concept of an organ trio has always been close to Phil Robson's heart, but he wanted to feel that he had his own, unique take on this great tradition before forming one himself and that time is now!  New material is being written especially for the 2014 tour. With admirers as distinguished as Dave Liebman and Wayne Krantz, Phil's playing and composing needs no further explanation here. He is without doubt in the front rank. And this group gives him new challenges and new textures to play with.

"Phil Robson is a disturbingly good jazz guitar player!", Dave Liebman.

    Blue Pearl

    9 May 2014 19:45

Blue Pearl is the seminal track on The Amazing Bud Powell the inspiration for this new quartet, who also play the music of Charlie Parker.

Led by drummer John Hirst, this band continues the traditiona of interpretation on interpretation - Blue Pearl comes from the Cole Porter song, "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and this quartet have taken the whole mood of Powell and Parker to a contemporary level. A band to watch.

Line-up: Chris Young, alto sax; David Ferris, keyboard; James Banner, bass, John Hirst Drums.

    Jon Lloyd Group

    11 April 2014 19:45

This tour supports Jon's latest album 'Vanishing Points': which sees him moving away from his free-improv roots to more harmonically inclined work. His compositions provide melody interspersed with moments of dazzling virtuosity and creative drive. As well as Jon the current group includes John Law, Rob Palmer, Tom Farmer and Asaf Sirkis.

Jon Lloyd – soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, composition -  who has played on the UK jazz and improvised music scene for over 20 years, with the likes of Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, Marcio Mattos, Paul Clarvis, Stan Adler, Michel Pilz and Gerry Hemingway.

John Law - Pianist - has been a key member of Lloyd's groups since the Jon Lloyd Quartet’s Syzygy back in 1991. He is a musician with a rare sensitivity and a fearless ability which cuts across all genres; his own musical path has connected freeform, classical music and jazz , reaching a high in recent years with his Congregation Trio with Asaf Sirkis and Yuri Goloubev.

Rob Palmer - Guitarist - who plays with a powerful soloing style coupled with a high regard for texture and ambient sound. He also plays with saxophonist Theo Travis, vibes player Roger Beaujolais and French composer Daniel Biro.

Tom Farmer  - Bassist -  part of the new generation of highly accomplished UK jazz musicians – a bandleader with the phenomenal Empirical.

Dave Hamblett - drums (sitting in for Asaf Sirkis) Jon says: "Dave is a fantastic replacement and suits my music perfectly."

"…this is definitely a group to catch if you can." John Lyons, Jazz UK.

"A saxophone delivery as persuasive as a speaking voice. Lloyd should be seen and heard more often." Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD

"Ambitious and virtuosic...one of the most striking writers at the sharp end of British jazz and improvisation." John Fordham, The Guardian, UK
