John was a very busy pianist in London while he was studying at the Royal Academy and he is just as busy in New York where he has just completed his masters at the Manhattan School of Music. One of his regular gigging partners there is Dave Binney – a dynamic presence on the alto in the basement clubs of New York. They will be joined by new force on the scene, Tyshawn Sorey on drums.

Friday 10th October

Bishi

Concrete

8pm

In partnership with Shaanti & Sampad

Singer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Bishi has been described as the doyenne of hybrid music. Mixing traditional Asian instruments, English folk, electronic beats and lyrical melody, Bishi creates a unique soundworld that is pure British pop at heart.
Her recent album, `Nights at The Circus` saw her explore ancient and modern Britain, the rich tapestry of East London`s folklore, social politics and dramatic history providing a vivid backdrop to her writing.
2008 has been an exciting year - a nomination for `The Times Breakthrough Award` at the South Bank Show Awards; recording in Buenos Aires; a sell out tour with the legendary female singers of English Folk and shortly a gala concert of the entire album performed with the LSO strings.
With all this and writing/ recording for the new album underway Bishi is fast becoming a force in modern British music.

Django Bates stoRMChaser Big Band special project

CBSO Centre

8.00pm

£15 (£10)

www.thsh.co.uk

This gig will be recorded for broadcast on Jazz On Three.

As Professor of Rhythmic Music at the Conservatory of Rhythmic Music (RMC) in Copenhagen, the don is taking a sabbatical to tour his regular college orchestra, StoRMChaser (RMC…see what he did there?). They have just completed a remarkable album, Spring is Here (Shall We Dance?) on the Lost Marble label, of original compositions. As you would expect, the music is clever, funny and witty. Plus, the added weight of a 19 piece orchestra adds an exciting dimension to Bates’s work we haven’t really heard since Loose Tubes.

Tuesday 21st October

Ingrid Laubrock Sleepthief Trio

Recital Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire

7.30pm

£8

£6 concessions & Birmingham Jazz Members

A welcome return to Birmingham Jazz for Ingrid, who is certainly one of the most interesting and original of the new generation of saxophoners. Sleepthief is a largely improvisation-based combination of Ingrid on saxes with the always startling Liam Noble on piano and the remarkable Tom Rainey on drums. This tour is in support of the group’s eponymously named debut album.

Sid Peacock's Surge

Sid’s freewheeling, multi-inspirational Surge is on the loose again. Sid is an original and idiomatic influence on jazz Birmingham. So if you ask for no guarantees about what you may be letting yourself in for, then you should come and see this one. A great club venue. And no charge for entry!
