This year our annual Festival will take place in May, for three days of live and life enhancing music. On 13th, 14th & 15th of May we will be presenting 12 bands with three of them free to enter, the first gig of each day. The details will be listed in due course.
The theme for this Festival will be the emergence and development of British Jazz into its own style and uniqueness. This Festival will showcase jazz musicians who have emerged in the decades, stating in the 1960's Birmingham Jazz delivers a Festival reflecting jazz across the generations. UK jazz came of age in the ‘60’s & has evolved since then. Its influences reflect the development of the nation with Caribbean, African & Indian influences instead of just the dominant African/American classic jazz. UK Jazz is ever-evolving to engage new & diverse audiences, young & old, different cultures & genders. The Festival will promote bands & musicians reflecting the changes & influences over the decades, up to the 21st Century.
The reverberations of the British jazz boom that detonated in the mid-2010s echo on, as do its inventive crossovers mixing jazz, hip-hop, Afrobeat & funk. Its freshly stirred stew characterise the century since the very first jazz boom directed toward amalgamating the music of: Africa, Caribbean, India & Europe. This Festival delivers a Festival celebrating & affirming UK jazz over the past 55+ years; as an outstanding musical form bringing together diverse worldwide genres, audiences & musicians, applying their collective knowledge & intuition into live improvisation. 10 years before Birmingham Jazz was formed, jazz in the UK found its own British culture refracting the music from the Caribbean & Indian sub-continent.
