Arran Shanghavi

When reflecting on some of his favourite compositions, bandleader Arran had the realisation that so many of the composers were also pianists in their own right. Why is this the case? Well, this concert will shed almost no direct light on the answer to that question—but you can expect to hear beautiful works by celebrated (and some under-celebrated) artists who were, and are, both performing pianists and composers. Expect compositions by Horace Silver, Dudley Moore, Henry Mancini, Duke Ellington, John Williams, Debussy, Herbie Hancock and more—plus anecdotes about them. However, don’t just expect the originals—expect them reimagined in hard-bop and bebop contexts, delivered by an alto sax- and trumpet-led jazz quintet. Join us for an evening that shines a spotlight on the talents who have shaped music from both the bench and the page—musicians who blurred the line between performer and creator.
