Kind of Blue - Legends Festival
Our 2019 Legends Festival will take place on: Friday 17th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May. It is likely that the whole Festival will be held in 1000 Trades, our brilliant venue, in the Jewellery Quarter.
One of the defining moments in musical history was the studio recording Kind of Blue by the jazz trumpeter Miles Davis 60 years ago. This masterpiece is regarded by many critics as the greatest jazz record and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music has led writers to deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded. In 2019 we want to celebrate this anniversary with a weekend festival on this theme, celebrating the musicians on the record. The Festival will deliver modern interpretations on the 60-year-old classic ‘Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. The three-day Festival in May 2019 will include a programme of performances, some free to attend, performed by some of the best jazz musicians of the modern day.
The provisional programme and lead theme is:
Xhosa Cole (2018 Young Jazz Musician of the Year) - Coltrane/Cobb
Nigel Thomas Quartet - Davis
Henry Lowther (on Miles Davis)
Still Waters
Franki Dodwell
Nick Dewhurst - Kind of Blue Tribute
Andy Hague - Adderley
Arnie Somogyi - Kind of Blue Tribute
John Donaldson Hexagonal - Tyner
Kate Williams - Evans
Denys Baptiste - Coltrane (Love Supreme)
