Guitarist Joe Morris Plays Hare & Hounds Kings Heath

Joe Morris is a fine guitarist and bass player whose music I have generally heard in the context of New York’s free jazz Vision Festival, playing either solo or in groups led by Matthew Shipp or William Parker.  But I first heard him in UK sitting in with the improvising trio from Leeds, Hession Fell Wilkinson.  I remember feeling that Joe’s very thoughtful linear approach didn’t quite fit with the high energy approach of the trio, and was delighted to put him on as a solo guitarist for Birmingham Jazz and Fizzle at the latter’s former home at the Old Moseley Arms.  Here we heard Joe’s essentially acoustic approach with solos built around long flowing lines with sudden fascinating changes of direction.

Anyway, he is a fine player well worth catching and I am delighted to report that he will be back in Birmingham on Thursday 29th October at the Hare & Hounds on the High Street in Kings Heath.  He will be playing with Tony Bevan, another excellent improviser on tenor and bass saxophone, Dominic Lash on bass and Tony Buck on drums.  Tony Buck was last here with The Necks, the Australian piano trio.

The event is being put on by The Polar Bear Records and doors are at 8pm.  Steve of The Polar Bear tells me that the gig is likely to be free entry, but ring 0121-441-5202 to check.
