Jazz Club is our monthly session at The Rainbow pub in Digbeth. The program covers music from right across the spectrum of Jazz, but predominantly focuses on young, dynamic (and often loud!) bands.
In the past we’ve had sets from Soweto Kinch, Chris Bowden, Robert Mitchell’s Panacea, Fraud, The Hub (New York) and the John Randall Quintet to name a few. The future looks just as bright with many great established and up-and-coming artists confirmed.
Check out our listings page for full details.
Below you’ll find recordings of some of the gigs we’ve presented at this session. We’ll be updating this page regularly so it’s well worth checking back to see what treats we have in store….

Zed-U
25th November 2009

Shabaka Hutchings – sax & clarinet
Neil Charles – bass
Seb Rochford – drums
Zed-U are Shabaka Hutchings, Neil Charles and Tom Skinner. Their debut album, Night time on the middle passage was launched last year to critical acclaim and was played to death in the Birmingham Jazz office. For their gig at Jazz Club in November, Tom had a more than able replacement in Polar Bear’s Seb Rochford. Zed-U describe themselves as playing music they’d like to hear and luckily, it’s music we like to hear too. Launch the jukebox here.

Sam Wooster Quartet
28th October 2009

Sam Wooster – trumpet
Jimmy Brewer – guitar
Tom Sinnett – bass
Jim Bashford – drums
Sam is a graduate of the conservatoire jazz course, and leads this band of fellow graduates. Very much influenced by Cuong Vu’s approach to soundscaping and texture (we were lucky enough to have Cuong Vu at Jazz Club earlier in the year – see below), Sam presented an electrifying set of original material back in October. Launch the jukebox here.

Zappajazz Aaron Diaz – Trumpet Recorded and Mixed by Peter Maxwell-Dixon This band of young Birmingham musicians is led by Trumpeter Aaron Diaz. As the name suggests, they play Frank Zappa tunes with a jazz twist.
